As the Moby Dick sailed the New World, Oden and Toki studied a crude map of the world. Oden asked where Toki was born, and she did not know, but wanted to go to Wano Country because her parents were from there. As they sailed with the Whitebeard Pirates for four years and learned more about the world, Oden and Toki fell in love and Toki gave birth to Momonosuke and Hiyori. During this time, Whitebeard decided to split his growing crew into divisions, and he appointed Oden as the leader of the second division, which Oden was not enthused by.

The Whitebeard Pirates continued exploring new islands and taking in new people, including an orphan named Teach. So this means Blackbeard probably should have quite the knowledge about Wano. With that in mind, I wonder if we can expect him to join the chaos in Wano later. The more Oden saw during this voyage, the more he wanted to continue adventuring. During the fourth year of Oden’s voyage, the Whitebeard Pirates noticed the sea creatures fleeing in panic from an island, and they docked at the island, and found even the land animals running away. On the other side of the island, the Roger Pirates had brutally beaten a group of Marines when Buggy alerted them that the Whitebeard Pirates had arrived.

The aura of Roger causing the animals to run in fear was amazing. I liked that we finally see a reason for him being called a Demon. He seemed almost sadistic in this chapter. Ruthless like a pirate is usually characterized with. He seems to thirst for battle almost. The differences between approaches for Whitebeard and Roger was interesting as well. Where Whitebeard flees from the Marines despite being more than strong enough to flatten those ships with little to no challenge to avoid further issues, Roger directly challenges the Marines to actually send a deserving force after him. So this chapter just debunked the Scopper Gaban = Denjiro theory, as we saw Gaban on the last page with Roger’s crew, while Denjiro was still at Wano. Roger decided to go and confront them, as it may be the final time he would get to encounter Whitebeard. So next chapter Roger vs Whitebeard? Will Oden immediately join Roger after this fight?
Kozuki Oden was the daimyo of Kuri in Wano Country, the son of former Wano shogun Kozuki Sukiyaki, the husband of Kozuki Toki, and father of Kozuki Momonosuke and Kozuki Hiyori.

Oden is the name of a traditional Japanese winter dish.

Oden is similar to Mont Blanc Noland, as they are both the main protagonists of flashback stories in which they are executed in the end by greedy nobles, who then besmirched their family names through lies and misinformation.

Oden bears a resemblance to Heracles, a divine hero in Greek mythology:

Both possessed tremendous strength since infancy.
Both had numerous affairs with women.
Some of Oden’s actions are based on the Twelve Labours of Heracles:
Oden defeating the Mountain God is based on the fourth labour, the capture of the Erymanthian Boar.
Oden’s attempt to help the Flower Capital citizens during a great drought by diverting a river to the city is based on the fifth labour, cleaning the Augean stables in a single day. Unlike Heracles, Oden’s action ended in disaster.
Both were rejected and disowned by one of their family members (Heracles’ nemesis was Hera and Oden was disowned by his father, Kozuki Sukiyaki).
Both were sailors (Heracles was part of the Argonauts and Oden sailed with the Whitebeard Pirates and Roger Pirates).
Both had fathers who were rulers of their respective domains (Heracles’s father was Zeus, King and ruler of Olympus; Oden’s father was the head of the Kozuki family and shogun of Wano).

Oden was a division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates and later a member of the Roger Pirates.

Despite his brash personality, Oden has great literary skills, having started writing a log book detailing his journey around Wano Country.

As a descendant of the Kozuki Family, Oden also inherited from his ancestors the knowledge and skill to read Poneglyphs and write its ancient language.

Oden wielded two Meito of the O Wazamono grade: Ame no Habakiri (the sword said to be able to cut “heaven” itself) and its sister sword Enma (the sword said to be able to cut to the “bottom of hell”).

Oden was an exceptionally skilled master of Armament Haki. He also possessed Conqueror’s Haki. During his initial encounter with Edward Newgate 30 years ago, their sudden clash created a notable effect similar to lightning and released a large burst.
Oden was able to permanently scar the near-invulnerable Kaido, something no one else has been able to before and after.
33 years ago, Whitebeard left the Rocks Pirates after the death of his captain and begin his own crew. Three years later, the Whitebeard Pirates were shipwrecked on the Kuri region of Wano Country after climbing the waterfall and lost their supplies.

Whitebeard senses someone rapidly approaching them so he tells his crew to step back. Before they could figure out their next course of action, Kozuki Oden rushed to the scene and faced against Whitebeard. Oden clashes with Whitebeard creating what it seems a Conqueror’s Haki clash, as indicated by the black sparks. In a Luffy-like moment, but in reverse, Oden asks Whitebeard to join his crew and become his Nakama.

So begin Oden’s adventures as pirate! It is currently unknown how long Oden was a member of the Whitebeard Pirates before joining the Roger Pirates as well as how well he got along with the other members of the crew. However, it is implied that because of his status as a Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, he had a great amount of respect within the crew, and had the respect and leadership over the lower members of the Yonko’s crew. According to both Inuarashi and Sengoku, Whitebeard was greatly fond of Oden.
Within two years after being exiled, Oden, Kin’emon, and Denjiro parted ways with Yasuie and started touring Wano Country, with Oden wanting to explore the lawless Kuri. On their tour, they were joined by the siblings Izo and Kikunojo, Kanjuro, and Raizo. So Izo of the Whitebeard Pirates is finally confirmed to be Kikunojo’s older brother and one of Oden’s retainers. This is what I love about Oda’s writing!

He introduces Izo as a Whitebeard Commander way back in Marineford, and compared to Marco or Vista he’s not even the most important commander, but he ties it all back together with their connection to Oden. The world of One Piece is a living breathing world with one-time characters that are more than just wasted space or filler. That’s something that separates Oda from other writers. And I know we’ve seen this in the past with characters like Hachi or even places like Arlong Park being modeled after Sabaody Park but it’s always a nice thing to see something not so relevant have great relevance in the future. This is what a “gardener” type of writer should look like.

Now we could ask the following questions:

Why and in what context Izo and Oden decided to join Whitebeard’s crew?

Why Izo separated his way from Kiku?

Why Izo exactly and not another Scabbard? A personal revenge? A promise?

Will Izo appear in the Wano’s final war with Marco and the others?

I think that Oden joined Whitebeard Pirates looking for adventures while Izo joined them because he wanted to come back to feel the love of a father, and who can be better for the job that our man Shirohige!
